One way of improving access for tourists with disabilities is to provide information on the existing tourism facilities which can meet their demands and expectations satisfactorily. The Commission has carried out a study on how to improve information on the accessibility of tourism facilities for disabled people. As a result of this, an information sheet has been designed which will make it easier for people in charge of facilities to provide essential information which will help disabled people take informed decisions about their travel and holidays. The information sheet, and how to fill it in, will be published later this year, but is available now on the web-site.

The Commission has also produced a practical handbook for the tourism industry 'Making Europe accessible for tourists with disabilities' - prepared in 1996. The publication of this handbook contributes to raising awareness Europe-wide about the importance of taking the needs of disabled tourists into consideration. On a practical level, the impact of this work depends greatly on the active involvement of tourist operators. Copies in five languages (DE/EN/ES/FR/IT) are available from the Tourism Unit on request.

The year 2003 was the European Year of people with disabilities, as stated in a Council decision of 3 December 2001. Details of the Year, and information on the EU Disability Strategy are available.
